#BookReview In Custody by Anita Desai

31 Aug

41xfEVOmpzL._SL500_AA300_I have never really liked Anita Desai when I had to read her while in school. Maybe it was too heavy or the topic too intense to comprehend then. So this is one author i had a mental block about. What I learnt when I read her years later was that a lot of patience to read her, this is only because her writing is intense and it makes you think and sometimes it becomes a state of your mind.

What is characteristic of Anita Desai writes is the frankness which is her signature style – the feelings she evokes through her writing are stark and need no explanation.

Deven teaches Hindi literature to college students he is overjoyed to meet Nur, the great Urdu poet. He procures a second hand recorder to transcribe early Urdu poetry and conduct an interview. However, things dont go as planned. In Custody”  a poet’s last days and lost grandeur is depicted with such pathos, that it is hard not to wince, the writing is that powerful. The relationship between the poet and his long time admirer is so delicate that one wonders about all relationships in that perspective.
